What is IFS?
Internal Family System (IFS) model is an evidenced based, psychospiritual therapeutic modality used to treat a range of mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, addictions and eating disorders. This approach posits that similar to our outer families, we are all also made up of different "parts" or sub-personalities. Some of our parts get along and play healthy roles in our internal system, and others may be wounded and carry painful emotions. We usually also have parts who have found ways to shield us and keep the painful emotions out of our awareness.
Each person also has a core Self (or what may be called the Soul, Authentic or True Self, Buddha nature, etc.). The Self is calm, centered and grounded. Self energy is imbued with compassion, clarity, creativity, courage and confidence. The extent to which we experience these kinds of qualities is a reflection of how much of "Self" energy is available in us in any moment.
The goal of IFS is to help clients access "Self" so that they can heal wounded parts and bring their minds into balance. This is referred to as "Self Leadership," which means that internal conflicts are brought into balance and harmony because Self is in the leadership role.
